How to Care for a Vacuum Cleaner

With proper use and care your vacuum cleaner should last a long time.

Bags
Check the bag to see if it is full before each use. Change it if needed. Before you put a new bag in, clean out the filter underneath the bag. Snap out the filter and wash it with soap and water or as directed by the manufacturer. Newer vacuum cleaners also use an exhaust filter. Clean the filter if it becomes noticeably dirty.

Beaters
Keep the beater bar clean. Replace belts and brushes as required. Clean vents, if needed.

Belts
We recommend that you change the vacuum belt about every 6-12 months to prevent strain on your motor.
  • Remove the plastic cover over the brush assembly. You may need to loosen some retaining screws to remove the cover.
  • Lift the brush and pull the belt from the motor.
  • While you have the brush out, clean it off and check the bearings on the brush rollers. Both ends should turn freely. If they don't, you may need to replace the bearings. Bearings typically cost about $2.50 per side, and the brush will cost about $15.
  • Install a new belt, and replace the brush. The brush will probably have marks that indicate the proper direction for installation, and there will be an indication of where the belt should go.

If you have trouble inserting the tube assembly into the connector assembly, simply lubricate the outside of the tube assembly on each end. (a tiny bit of petroleum jelly works well.)
