How to Choose a New Refrigerator

Your refrigerator uses the most energy in your home. As a rule, the larger the refrigerator, the more it will cost to operate. And some types of refrigerators will be more efficient in others.

The larger the refrigerator the more energy it will use. The most efficient models are usually 16 to 20 cubic foot capacity.

Find the right size for your needs. Ten cubic feet is big enough for two people. Figure one more cubic foot for each additional person in the household. So, a four person household would require about twelve cubic feet. And a six person household would require about fourteen cubic feet.

Bottom-freezer refrigerators are most efficient, followed by top-freezer refrigerators. Bottom freezers are the most energy-efficient, and place frequently used refrigerator space directly at eye level.

Top-freezers use 10 to 25 percent less energy than side-by-side refrigerators. The freezer compartment is smaller than a side-by-side.

Side-by-side refrigerators are the most popular refrigerator models. They are also the least energy efficient models.

Refrigerator Features:

Automatic moisture control: This feature is designed to prevent moisture accumulation on the cabinet exterior without the addition of a heater.

Manual defrost: Manual defrost models use half the energy of automatic defrost models? (Frost buildup raises the amount of energy needed to keep the motor running so don't let frost build up more than one-quarter of an inch.)

You may also want to consider adjustable shelving, slide-outs, removable door bins, quick cool compartment, gallon jug bin, a butter keeper, can dispensers, wine or bottle racks, egg containers, adjustable shelving, special-use bins and freezers with quick-ice making capability

Fancy models have customizable digital displays, flat panel TV mounted on the door front, or built-in filtration for the water dispenser. (Keep in mind that they typically use 14% - 20% more energy.)

Look for the "Energy Star" label. Spending a bit more money on an energy efficient refrigerator will be beneficial to you in the long run.
